Susana Cárdenas-Alayza PhD
Director, Punta San Juan Program
Director, Center for Environmental Sustainability (CSA)
Associate Professor, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia
My interests lie in understanding the coexistence of wild populations and their adaptations to dynamic marine environments. I focus on marine top predators as vehicles to understand the Humboldt Current System with a research hub in an extraordinary natural spot in the world called Punta San Juan in southern Peru.
About Me.
I am a Peruvian woman scientist. Since I was a little girl, I always had an interest to help protect nature and wildlife. In my final years of undergraduate studies I had the fortune of visiting a little hidden jewel called Punta San Juan in southern Peru, to which I have devoted not only my academic life, but also my professional time to help manage marine biodiversity conservation issues at this site. I have spent the past 18 years of my life trying to understand how species respond to the natural and anthropogenic changes in the marine environment. I am motivated by trying to tease apart the key factors involved in the sustainability of wild populations and extending management recommendations to help populations thrive. I promote wildlife monitoring, research and capacity building and work in collaboration with governmental agencies to recommend key research and management actions to increase nature conservancy. I am a great believer in teamwork across disciplines and backgrounds. Explore this site to learn more about my work. Please contact me if you would like to collaborate.
